Service in detail
Faculty of 1000 Medicine is run by over 2,400 leading clinicians and researchers from 18 specialty areas, overseen by an International Advisory Board.
How are the Specialties organized?
Each specialty (Faculty) is run by up to three Head of Specialty (Faculty) and subdivided into sub-specialties (Sections), each run by two or three Sub-Specialty Heads (Section Heads). The Sub-Specialty Heads (Section Heads) select between 6 to 30 Faculty Members, with the approval of the Heads of Specialty (Faculty).
How are Faculty Members selected?
The Heads of Specialty (Faculty) and Sub-Specialty Heads (Section Heads) recruit Faculty Members based on the following criteria:
- The number of Faculty Members is proportionally representative of the number of significant articles, as judged by the Heads, published within that field.
- Selected Faculty Members should be well respected by their peers.
- There should be a good representation of genders and nationalities, as well as of established and emerging researchers and clinicians.
How it works
Faculty Members select, rate and evaluate the most important and influential articles, providing you with the information you need to instantly understand their significance.
Faculty Members evaluate an article in one of two ways: they either recommend it or they dissent on a fellow Faculty Member's recommendation. When an author has responded to an evaluation or a dissent, the response is published underneath.
When writing a recommendation, Faculty Members independently:
Select only the articles they believe make an important contribution to medicine. Articles can be chosen from any source (usually journals) and any date (usually recently published).
Explain why the article has been chosen, providing concise and authoritative insights on its value.
Assign a “Changes Clinical Practice” label to those articles they believe support a change in their current clinical thinking.
Rate the article to help focus your reading. They assign one of three ratings (“Recommended”, “Must Read” or “Exceptional”), which correspond to F1000 Factors of 3, 6 and 9, respectively.
Cross-index articles to all relevant sub-specialties (Sections). See list of specialties (Faculties) and sub-specialties (Sections).
Classify the article in a number of ways:
- The aspect of healthcare being studied
- The population being studied
- The type of study design employed in the article
Comments and dissents from Faculty Members are contributions in response to a recommendation. In addition, authors of evaluated articles are invited to submit a response.
In all contributions Faculty Members are asked to declare any competing interests.
