Dr. Joseph F John, Jr., is a graduate of Case Western Reserve Medical School. He has a long and sustaining interest in the mechanisms and control of antibiotic resistance. After a second-year fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, he joined the faculty in 1997 and became Professor of Medicine and Microbiology at MUSC in 1990. Thereafter, in 1992, he became Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In 2002 he returned to Charleston as Chief Medical Service, Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. John was one of the investigators who initially demonstrated the importance of bacterial plasmids in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes among Gram-negative pathogens. He also has had a career-long interest in many aspects of staphylococcal infection including their nosocomial manifestations. Dr. John is currently studying the role of various coagulase-negative species as human pathogens. He has continuing interest in global affects of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. He is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the American College of Physicians.
