Thomas Bleck’s many affiliations with the University of Virginia include Louise Nerancy Eminent Scholar in Neurology; Professor of Neurology, Neurological Surgery, and Internal Medicine; Chair of Critical Care; Committee Director of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. He is also Ruth Cain Ruggles Chairman of Neurology at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. And he is affiliated with Northwestern University Feinberg School as Vice-Chairman for Academic Programs at the Davee Department of Neurology and as Professor of Neurology, Neurological Surgery, and Medicine. Dr Bleck is a consultant for ESP/Pharma and Alsius Corporation and is on the speakers bureaus for ESP/Pharma and Pfizer.

Professor Bleck's research interests include head injury, status epilepticus, infectious diseases, acute cerebrovascular diseases, and neuromuscular respiratory failure.He was founding president of the Neurocritical Care Society and remains on their Board of Directors. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and a member of Infectious diseases Society of America. He undertakes a number of editorial responsibilities including neuroscience editor of Critical Care Medicine, Critical Care, Current Treatment Options in Neurology and Current Opinion in Critical Care. He is also an editorial board of the journal Neurocritical Care.

Thomas Bleck is a Section Head for Neurological Problems in Critical Care, part of the CRITICAL CARE & EMERGENCY MEDICINE Faculty. The role of a Section Head is to work with their Co-Section Head(s) to divide the Section (sub-specialty area) into its component areas of research, nominate leaders in those areas as Faculty Members, and offer ongoing oversight of the content within their Section. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
