Joseph S. Alpert is Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He is Robert S. and Irene P. Flinn Professor of Medicine. He is the co-chairman of an educational organization, International Cardiology Forum, which runs one of more meetings per year focusing on acute ischemic heart disease.

Professor Alpert has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). He is a Fellow of the Council on Clinical Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians and the European Society of Cardiology. He is also an honorary member of the Danish Cardiovascular Society, the Israeli Heart Association, and the Argentina Cardiology Association and is a past Chairman of the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association. He has received numerous teaching honors, including Gifted Teacher Award of the American College of Cardiology in 2004. Outstanding Teaching Awards at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1981, 1987, 1989, and 1990 and at the UA College of Medicine in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999, among many others. He is Editor-in Chief of the American Journal of Medicine and serves as a member of the Editorial Boards of ten cardiovascular journals.

Joseph Alpert is a Section Head for Valvular Disease, part of the CARDIOVASCULAR DISORDERS Faculty. The role of a Section Head is to work with their Co-Section Head(s) to divide the Section (sub-specialty area) into its component areas of research, nominate leaders in those areas as Faculty Members, and offer ongoing oversight of the content within their Section. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
