Research interests:
Dr. Schlegel is an internationally acclaimed expert in the treatment of male infertility, including the most severe cases of male infertility, where he has developed novel surgical techniques for treatment as well as providing a wider recognition of the role of genetic abnormalities in this condition. He is a recognized expert and has done research to optimize the surgical treatment of radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, providing one of the earliest and clearest definitions of the nerves involved with sexual function that abut the prostate and are saved during "nerve-sparing" prostate surgery.

Dr Schlegel received the Established Clinician Award by The European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology. He is Co-editor of the Journal of Andrology, on the Editorial board of the medical journals British Journal of Urology-International, Journal of Urology (Investigative Section), Techniques in Urology, Journal of Andrology, and FertiliText. He is also the Edwin A. Beer Program award recipient of The New York Academy of Medicine and received the New Investigator Award from the American Foundation for Urologic Diseases.

He is President of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a Past President of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, Past President of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction of the AUA, and is on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Reproductive Medicine as well as Chair of their Finance Committee. He was inducted into the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars in 2007.

Peter N Schlegel is a Section Head for Male Infertility, part of the UROLOGY Faculty. The role of a Section Head is to work with their Co-Section Head(s) to divide the Section (sub-specialty area) into its component areas of research, nominate leaders in those areas as Faculty Members, and offer ongoing oversight of the content within their Section. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
