Jacques Elion, MD, PhD

Academic positions:
- Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Paris Diderot University Medical School
- Director, Department of Medical Genetics, Robert Debre Mother and Child University Hospital, Paris
- Director, Research Unit 763, French National Institute of Heath and Medical Research (Inserm), Paris and Guadeloupe

Research interests:

Dr Elion’s research is focused the physiopathology of sickle cell disease and the identification of new therapeutic targets. His studies have identified several genetic markers contributing of the clinical variability of the disease. His work has demonstrated the pleiotropic action of hydroxyurea on several cellular targets besides the erythroid lineage, including endothelial cells and polymorphonuclear neutrophils and on the expression of an extended range of molecules involved in cell adhesion, vascular tone, and inflammatory mediators.

Dr Elion’s clinical laboratory-based research is focused on other genetic anemias including rare abnormalities of erythropoiesis and on the development of new metabolomic approaches for the investigation of genetic red blood cell enzyme defects.

Any other information:

Dr Elion’s clinical laboratory is one of the four French centers of the national program of neonatal screening for sickle cell disease. It is part of the French National Reference Centre for sickle cell syndrome and rare genetic anemias.

Dr Elion has served on many committees, including:

- Scientific Council of the Paris Diderot University (chairman of the evaluation sub-committee)

- Scientific Committee for technological innovation of the Assistance Publique – Hopitaux de Paris (AP-HP)

- Scientific Board of Clinical Research of the Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) (vice-chairman)

- Inserm Regional Scientific Committee (CSCRI Paris-Nord): Chairman - Inserm Specialized Scientific Advisory Boards (Hematology and Genetics)
