Dr Vincent's main fields of investigation are:
- Severe sepsis
- Acute circulatory failure (circulatory shock) and its treatment
- Oxygen transport
- Sepsis
- Hemodynamic monitoring
- Vital emergencies.

He also has a special interest in the ethical aspects of intensive care.

Dr. Vincent is the Editor-in-Chief of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care and ICU Management. He is a member of the editorial board of 30 international journals including Critical Care Medicine (senior editor), American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Chest, Shock and Journal of Critical Care.

Dr. Vincent has authored more than 600 original articles ( 500 in the English language, 100 in French), more than 257 book chapters and review articles, and 680 original abstracts. He has published 86 books including 62 in his own series "Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine" and "Yearbook in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine" published by Springer-Verlag (Heidelberg, Berlin, New York). He has also written a French Manual of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Springer, France).

Dr. Vincent's research has been recognized throughout his career. He has received the Foundation André Loicq award (1986), the Foundation De Kerckheer award in 2000, the Distinguished Investigator award of the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2001 and the College Medialist Award of the American College of Chest Physicians in 2003.

For 27 years, Dr Vincent has organized an International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine which is held every March in Brussels. This symposium, which gathers around 5,000 participants, has become one of the largest meetings in the field.

He is also a former president of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the European Shock Society and the International Sepsis Forum.

Head of Faculty: Critical Care & Emergency Medicine (since 16 November 2005)

Jean-Louis Vincent is a Head of Faculty for the CRITICAL CARE & EMERGENCY MEDICINE Faculty. The role of a Head of Faculty is to help divide the Faculty (specialty) into Sections (sub-specialty areas), nominate leaders in those areas as Section Heads, and offer ongoing advice on the strategic direction of the service. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
