Research interests:
Sir Marmot's research has been devoted to establishing the chain of disease causation from the social environment, through psychosocial influences, biological pathways, to risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. In studies of Japanese migrants to the USA and migrants to Britain from a number of countries, he showed that disease rates change. The longer the migrant has been in the new country, the more closely rates of disease resemble those of the new country. A specific object of investigation was the high rates of cardiovascular disease and diabetes among immigrants from the Indian subcontinent.

Sir Marmot is Principal Investigator in a number of well-funded collaborative studies, including the Whitehall II Study.

- Knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 2000 for services to epidemiology and understanding health inequalities
- Foreign Associate Member of the Institute of Medicine
- Gave the RCP Harveian Oration in October 2006
- Awarded the Balzan Prize 2004 for Epidemiology

Head of Faculty: Public Health & Epidemiology (since 16 November 2005)

Sir Michael Marmot is a Head of Faculty for the PUBLIC HEALTH & EPIDEMIOLOGY Faculty. The role of a Head of Faculty is to help divide the Faculty (specialty) into Sections (sub-specialty areas), nominate leaders in those areas as Section Heads, and offer ongoing advice on the strategic direction of the service. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
