Dr Garratty has been on several national committees, including the Standards Committee of the American Association of Blood Banks, and is an Associate Editor of Transfusion.. He has also represented North America on the International Society of Blood Transfusion Council.

He has received several prestigious awards, including the Ivor Dunsford (1978), Emily Cooley (1989), and Morten Grove-Rasmussen (1994) Memorial Awards of the American Association of Blood Banks; the Charles R. Drew Award of the American Red Cross (1987); and the Owen Thomas Memorial Award of the California blood Bank System (1987); and the Outstanding Research Award of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (1998).
