Gunter Stalla is Professor of Medicine at the Ludwigs-Maximilians-University of Munich. He also heads the Department of Internal Medicine/Endocrinology and Clinical Chemistry at the Max-Planck-Institute of Psychiatry (MPIP), the nominated European Training Centre for Endocrinology by the European Board of Endocrinology and the UEMS. He has been Chairman of the Research Council of the MPIP since 1996.

One focus of Professor Stalla’s clinical research is the investigation of pituitary deficiencies after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other brain lesions. Additionally, Professor Stalla investigates the neuropsychological, psychopathological and endocrine characteristics of patients with acromegaly including clinical studies regarding treatment as well as quality of life. Another topic of the research group is the investigation of central mechanisms involved in visceral obesity. Within the scope of an epidemiological study, it will be studied whether age-dependent hormonal changes affect the development of heart diseases, diabetes and psychiatric disorders and whether depression is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic disturbances. Professor Stalla is also investigating the pathogenesis of pituitary adenomas and meningiomas. A better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms will help to identify potential drug targets of these intracranial tumors, which will finally lead to new or improved medical treatment concepts.
