Piero Portincasa is leading an established international research group in Bari and is involved in translational research focusing on several aspects of hepatobiliary diseases (liver, gallbladder, intestine) and pathophysiology of gastrointestinal secretion, transport, and motility.
He teaches Internal Medicine, Pathophysiology, Methodology to 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th yr medical students and residents (Radiology, Radiotherapy, Occupational Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, PhD programs) and construction of European mobility programs (Socrates-Erasmus Lifelong Learning) towards and from several European universities. He has research responsibilities in assisting biologists and medical students, residents and PhDs at the University Medical School of Bari, Italy and in the panel of the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands.
He has received several grants and awards, including the Italian Ministry of University, the European Society of Clinical Investigation (ESCI), the Italian Society of Gastroenterology, the Dutch Society of Gastroenterology, the National Centre of Research in Italy. He serves as regular reviewer and is in the editorial board of several highly ranked International Journals and is continously organizing scientific meetings at a local, national and international level. He will be the organizer of the 2010 ESCI annual congress in Bari.
He is a member of the European Society for Clinical Investigation, Italian Societies of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Alcohol-related diseases, European Association of Study of Liver Diseases, Dutch Society of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, American Association for Study of Liver Diseases, American Gastroenterological Association, British Society of Gastroenterology, Romanian Association of Gastroenterology.
