Jianren Mao, MD, PhD, is a staff physician in anesthesia and pain management and director of the Pain Research Group and MGH Center for Translational Pain Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also an associate professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr Mao is board-certified in anesthesia and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology and Pain Management and is a member of the American Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. In 1999, Dr Mao received the Academic Achievement Award from the Medical College of Virginia and, in 1997, the Early Career Scholar Award from the American Pain Society. He was elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists in 2005.

Dr Mao serves as a regular reviewer for some 20 professional journals and is on the editorial board of Molecular Pain, Journal of Neuropathic Pain, Journal of Pain, and Pain Medicine. He is the author or co-author of over 100 original articles, book chapters, and abstracts. Dr Mao received his medical degree from Suzhou Medical College, Suzhou, China, in 1983. He completed his anesthesia residency at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, in 1999 and a pain management fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 2000. He also received a PhD degree in neuroscience/physiology from the Medical College of Virginia in 1992.
