Research interests:
Dr Liang's current research interests include basic methodologic work in clinimetrics, clinical trials methodology in systemic lupus erythematosus, the epidemiology of rheumatic disease and disability, prevention of Lyme disease, outcomes research, the identification of modifiable risk factors in high risk and disadvantaged populations, clinical decision making, and prevention of osteoarthritis

Dr Liang founded and directed the Robert B. Brigham Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Clinical Research Center at the Brigham and Women's Hospital (1977-2002). He is also a founding faculty member of the Clinical Effectiveness Program at HSPH.

Dr Liang is a member of the BWH Research Institute's Clinical Research Committee, Director, Center for Advanced Methodological Support for Innovative SLE Trials (ASSIST), Chief of the Section of Rheumatology at the VA Boston Healthcare System and Study Director in the VA Cooperative Studies Program (CSP). In addition, he has served on the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. He is also a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration, the Shriners Hospital - Boston, Hong Kong Research Council, the Arthritis Research Center of Canada, and the Office of the Clinical director of the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Dr Liang serves on the editorial boards of Arthritis and Rheumatism,Lupus, SPINE, The American Journal of Medicine, Nature Clinical Practice Rheumatology, Patient Care, and Current Rheumatology Reviews. He has been named one of the Best Doctors in America and is the recipient of the Lawrence Poole Prize in Rehabilitation from the University of Edinburgh, the Lee C. Howley Sr. Prize for Research in Arthritis, the Kirkland Scholar Award and the American College of Rheumatology Award of Distinction for Clinical Research.

Matthew Liang is a Section Head for Epidemiology, part of the PUBLIC HEALTH & EPIDEMIOLOGY Faculty. The role of a Section Head is to work with their Co-Section Head(s) to divide the Section (sub-specialty area) into its component areas of research, nominate leaders in those areas as Faculty Members, and offer ongoing oversight of the content within their Section. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
