Dr. Edward Zuperku's research area and interests include neurobiology and the neuropharmacology of breathing. Specific areas of investigation and interest involve the functional organization of the brainstem respiratory control system; the role that various types of neurons serve in that organization; the modes of afferent information processing and the neurotransmitter receptors used for the control of motor output patterns and phase-timing. Dr. Zuperku's pharmacological studies include the effects of anesthetics and opioids on neuronal discharge patterns, membrane ion channels, and synaptic neurotransmission to single respiratory neurons. The roles of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the modulation of respiratory neuronal activity are also areas of research in Dr. Zuperku's laboratory.

Any competing interests declared are displayed with individual evaluations.
