Dr Kerl has served as President for many international societies including the Austrian society for Dermatologie, the International Society of Dermatopathology and the International League for Dermatopathology. He is also the founder of the European Society for Dermatopathology and the International Board Certification in Dermatopathology

He is associate editor of the American Journal of Dermatopathology and is on the editorial board of numerous German and international magazines. He has authored more than 400 scientific publications, several books on dermatology, and has delivered more than 500 lectures throughout the world.
