Research interests:
Starting with studies about the role of blood glucose levels for fluid balance and plasma refill in hemorrhagic stress in the 1980's in animal models, Dr Ljungqvist found a close link between metabolism and fluid balance. From this he moved to study the role of short term fasting (24h or less) and the accompanying change in metabolism from a fed to a fasted state for the reactions to surgical stress, initially in animal models. This led to the questioning of the overnight fasting routine from a nutritional and metabolic point of view. These issues have been addressed in a series of studies in patients focusing on insulin action, insulin resistance and glucose and protein metabolism in relation to surgery. The latter patient studies of metabolic reactions and outcomes in surgical patients have been the main focus of his research group over the last 10-15 years, and has led into their most recent interest enhanced recovery after surgery programs. In these programs, the stress of surgery is minimized using various perioperative treatments, while at the same time selecting treatments that facilitate recovery of key bodily functions, such as gut function, to form treatment protocols that support rapid recovery after surgical operations.
