Research interests:
Dr Bellentani's main clinical research interests focuses on clinical epidemiology of chronic liver disease. The basic research is related to the molecular mechanisms of liver disease, steatosis in particular.

His group are particularly interested in the prevalence, incidence and natural history of the most common liver disease in Italy, such as virus C (HCV)-induced liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, and fatty liver, mainly Non-Alcoholic and Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD and AFLD). During the last 2 years they have developed a new line of epidemiological research by studying the relationship between nutrition, alimentary habits, alcohol intake, metabolic diseases and fatty liver. In addition to the clinical portion of the research they are also involved in basic investigation on the molecular mechanisms of liver disease.

Dr Bellentani is Chief of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Liver Center (Centro Studi Fegato), Trieste, Italy, Member of:the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF); the Italian Associaton of Gastroenterology (SIGE); the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL); and of the American Association for the Study of the Liver (AASLD).
