David Archer

At McGill he extended his program to obtain research training in neurosciences at the Montreal Neurological Institute under the supervision of Professor Hanna Pappius. The research environment was very rich, with the development of autoradiography and its application to human imaging with positron emission tomography. In 1987, Patterson and his family moved to Calgary. Patterson says the Anaesthesia Department at the University of Calgary offers many opportunities for research and teaching.

Patterson says he has profited tremendously from the support of his colleagues both in Anaesthesia and in the Neuroscience Research Group. His collaboration with Professor Sheldon Roth has been particularly rewarding and has led to the development of new concepts for the neuronal mechanisms of anesthetic action. Although research has come somewhat later than usual in his career, it is now a very rewarding facet of his life at the university.
