Research interests:
Dr Vermorken's main field of interest is in gynecologic oncology, and head and neck oncology. In addition, he co-ordinated large trials in breast and colon cancer. His main research areas concern early clinical and pharmacological studies with new drugs, studies on the interaction of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, HPV in various malignancies, and immunological approaches.

Dr Vermorken is a member of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Gynecological Cancer Group, the EORTC Head and Neck Cancer Group, serving as chairman of its Subcommittee for Chemotherapy (1985-1991) and currently Secretary and Full member of several other EORTC groups, among which the New Drug Development Group

He is an Officer for ESMO, a member of the ESMO Executive Committee and a prominent member of the ESMO Faculty. He is also a member of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, a founding member of the Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup and was Chairman of the Belgian Association of Cancer Research in 2003.

Dr Vermorken is a member of six editorial board of International journals, reviewer of 13 cancer journals and author or co-author of more than 300 publications in international journals.

Section Head: Oncology > Head & Neck Cancers (since 16 November 2005)

Jan Vermorken is a Section Head for Head & Neck Cancers, part of the ONCOLOGY Faculty. The role of a Section Head is to work with their Co-Section Head(s) to divide the Section (sub-specialty area) into its component areas of research, nominate leaders in those areas as Faculty Members, and offer ongoing oversight of the content within their Section. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
