Research interests:
Dr. Eisenberger's research focuses on clinical trials in patients with urological cancers. His major research efforts are in the area of prostate cancer. Over the past several years Dr. Eisenberger has established his expertise in the design and conduct of clinical trials in patients with various stages of prostate cancer. He has organized an effective infrastructure to conduct pilot and large scale trials ranging from phase I/II/ and III studies with promising compounds. Recent accomplishments include a large, multi-institutional,multinational study that demonstrated, for the first time a significant survival advantage with chemotherapy in patients with hormone-refractory disease. This resulted in the FDA approval of a widely used cytotoxic drug, docetaxel, for prostate cancer. He currently chairs several other trials attempting to build on the activity of this compound. In the area of early prostate cancer, in collaboration with the department of urology, he has participated in investigations that defined the outcome of patients with biochemically relapsed disease after radical prostatectomy. This represents an ongoing investigation of the Johns Hopkins large data base on these patients which has generated critical clinical information used in the management of these patients and for the design of clinical trials. Dr. Eisenberger is the chairman of a large multinational adjuvant chemo/hormonal therapy for patients with high risk prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy.
