After completing his degree and PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Southampton, Professor Vince Emery undertook a post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Virology, University of Oxford during which time his interest in virology started. He was appointed a Lecturer in Virology at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1988 and began working human cytomegalovirus and papillomavirus infections. Following promotion to Senior Lecturer he obtained his Chair within University College London in 2000. His research interests include using molecular biological and more recently immunological methods to understand viral pathogenesis in the immunocompromised host and the application of mathematical biology to gain further insight into the ways in which viruses causes disease and in understanding and predicting the emergence of drug resistance. Professor Emery has published over 150 original papers and reviews and is currently editing a major book on cytomegalovirus (Human Virus Guide:Cytomegalovirus) which will be published later in 2006.
