Ravindra Mehta

Dr Mehta is Prof. of Medicine, Div. of Nephrology & Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs, Dept of Medicine, University of California, San Diego (UCSD) where he directs the Clinical nephrology & dialysis programs. He is an internationally recognized expert in the field of acute renal failure (ARF) & has directed several clinical studies in the management of patients with kidney disease including comparing different dialytic modalities in the treatment of ARF conducting large multicenter observational studies of ARF with the PICARD group, evaluating different predictive models for outcomes in ARF, investigating the role of cytokine removal by dialysis membranes in sepsis & ARF & evaluating techniques for determining the amount of excess fluid in dialysis patients. He has worked with the American Soc. of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, Soc. of Critical Care Medicine & the International Soc. of Nephrology in developing courses for fellows & practicing physicians in clinical nephrology & dialysis techniques. He chairs the annual International Conference on CRRT that is now in its 11th year. He is also the Chair of the International Soc. of Nephrology Commission on ARF, founding member of the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative & the author/coauthor of scientific articles, papers & book chapters. He is involved in resident & scholar teaching & has won the house staff teaching award on 4 occasions. In 2003 he was awarded the School of Medicine Faculty teaching award. He has trained over 40 post-doctoral fellows in nephrology. He received the MBBS degree (1976) from the Government Medical School, Amritsar, India & the MD (79) & DM (81) degrees from the Post Graduate Inst. of Medical Education & Research in Chandigarh, India. He subsequently completed a nephrology fellowship at the University of Rochester, NY & obtained his boards in internal medicine (86) & Nephrology (88). He has been on the faculty at San Diego since 88.
