Professor Alistair Burns, MBChB, FRCP, FRCPsych, MD, MPhil, DHMSA is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at The University of Manchester in the UK and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust. He graduated in medicine in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1980 and trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry in London. He became the Foundation Chair of Old Age Psychiatry in Manchester in 1992. He was Director of Research and Development in South Manchester University Hospitals' NHS Trust until March 2002 and is a Non-Executive Director of the Trust Board of the Hospital. Professor Burns is a member of the North West Multi-Centre Research Ethics Committee, and immediate Past President of the International Psychogeriatric Association. He is Editor of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Assistant Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry. He is Director of the North West Dementia Centre. His research and clinical interests are in dementia, Alzheimer's disease and depression. He has published over 180 papers and 12 books in the field of mental health problems in older people.
