James Crapo is Professor of Medicine at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Clinical Science Ph.D. Program at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Research efforts have focused on mechanisms of oxidative injury and the role of antioxidants in blocking both normal and abnormal oxidative stress. The role of extracellular superoxide dismutase as a regulator of the bioavailability of nitric oxide and, thus, intercellular signal transduction is being explored in models of inflammation, smooth muscle (airway and vasculature) reactivity and in disease states where nitric oxide putatively acts as a neurotransmitter. Professor Crapo's laboratory is developing small molecular weight catalytic antioxidants that can be used as drugs and as molecular probes to determine the role of free radicals in normal biology and in disease processes such as radiation-induced injury, stroke, diabetes, chronic lung disease and cancer.

Professor Crapo is a member of the following societies: the American Thoracic Society, the American Physiological Society, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American College of Physicians, the Fleischner Society (past President), the Association of American Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians and the Oxygen Society. He is also editor of the Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Head of Faculty: Respiratory Disorders (since 16 November 2005)

James Crapo is a Head of Faculty for the RESPIRATORY DISORDERS Faculty. The role of a Head of Faculty is to help divide the Faculty (specialty) into Sections (sub-specialty areas), nominate leaders in those areas as Section Heads, and offer ongoing advice on the strategic direction of the service. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
