Gunter Breithardt

Gunter Breithardt is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the Hospital of the University of Münster, Germany. He also heads the Department of Molecular Cardiology at the Leibniz-Institute for Arteriosclerosis Research, University of Münster.
His research interests focus on cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, and arteriosclerosis. Professor Breithardt is President of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and of the German Cardiac Society. Within the ESC, he is Chairman of the Executive Scientific Committee and of other committees of the European Society of Cardiology. He is also Chairman of the National Network of Competence in Atrial Fibrillation and of the Special Collaborative Research Programme of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft SFB 556 Heart Failure and Arrhythmias, from Molecular Basis to Clinical Management. He is an honorary member of the Polish, French and the Norwegian Cardiac Societies and a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and of the American College of Cardiology. He has received the Edens-Award from the University of Düsseldorf, and Arthur-Weber-Award, from the German Cardiac Society for his research.

Gunter Breithardt is a Section Head for Arrhythmias, Electrophysiology & Pacing, part of the CARDIOVASCULAR DISORDERS Faculty.
The role of a Section Head is to work with their Co-Section Head(s) to divide the Section (sub-specialty area) into its component areas of research, nominate leaders in those areas as Faculty Members, and offer ongoing oversight of the content within their Section. They are not asked to evaluate articles, although we do, of course, welcome them.
