Research interests:

My research has included two main tracks aimed at understanding persons with dementia, and health promotion in community-dwelling older persons. The dementia research has included studies on behavior problems, which are also known as agitation, in persons with dementia, change and retention of self-identity with the progression of dementia, detection of pain in advanced dementia, decisions regarding medical treatments, the impact of physical restraints and their removal, depressed affect in persons with dementia, autonomy provided to nursing home residents with dementia, and research methodology with persons with dementia. Related research has included studies of systems of care, focusing on topics such as stress among nursing home caregivers, satisfaction surveys in the nursing home, use of the MDS, advance directives, use of technology, and adult day care. The studies concerning community-dwelling older persons have worked toward understanding and preventing loneliness in this population, and clarifying factors that affect motivation to exercise.
